Turtle Season!

No, not for hunting! Although, what do I know, it very well could be. I tend to doubt it though, because it’s actually the time of year for them to climb up into my yard, dig holes and lay their eggs. Here’s some pics I took. As always, click for larger pictures.

If anyone knows offhand what kind of turtle this is, I’d love to know.

  1. I don’t know the species, Matt, but I surely wish I had such a wonderful thing in my backyard. I wonder if you see the hatchlings when they emerge, as well.

  2. I’m pretty certain it’s a snapper, after doing some internet detective work. The shame of it is, more often than not, the skunks in the area dig em up. I find egg shells and deep holes all over the place a few days later. Makes mowing the lawn a real pain!

  3. Oh, I wish I had turtles in my backyard…last night while I was sitting in the hot tub, a skunk waddled across the lawn. You win, a turtle is definatly a better sighting!

  4. this happens at my mom’s boyfriends house too. except the turtle species i believe is different. he has a lake in his back yard .. yes a lake .. that is surrounded by a grand total of 19 houses that is full of turtles, fish, and the occasional duck(s) that stop by.every now and then a turtle will come to shore, walk very slowly to a nice spot of her liking, dig, and lay eggs. Unfortunately (9 times out of 10) a skunk or usually a raccoon will find them, dig them up, and discard of their insides. poor little guys … never saw it comin
