21st Amendment Brewery – Back in Black

Brew Style: Black IPA
Brewer: 21st Amendment Brewery
ABV: 6.8%
IBU: 65
BrewNewb Opinion: Good Beer

I’m still working pretty hard to shake my prejudices about beer in cans. When I hold a can that I know contains beer, my taste buds automatically prepare to be let down.

However, this particular can holds some darn good beer.

Pour: This was poured into a Samuel Adams perfect pint glass. This beer pours a deep opaque brown, very nearly black, with a nice tan head. Lacing is pretty decent as well.

Nose: Nothing over powering or even standout, all aromas well balanced. Malt, Citrus, nuts, a little pine.

Taste: It’s a sweet caramel taste in the front, a little bit bready followed by the citrusy hops. Everything blends well in the back end.

All things considered, this is a good beer, I would drink this again, and plan to. A good example of one of my favorite brews!

  1. I understand your reluctance to drink beer from cans. When good beer almost went extinct during the 70’s and 80’s the only beer that came in cans was swill. At our Spring Beer and Wine Festival here in Portland, Oregon I ran into several local breweries who were beginning to reintroduce their beers in a 12 oz. can. As it turns out there are several benefits to canning as opposed to bottling. Who knew!?!
